Double-thick cuff with embedded ear flaps!
This hat starts with a provisional cast on and is worked down to the ears and back up for extra warmth. Asymmetrical short rows are used halfway through the cuff to add extra length around the ears, so the hat will keep your ears warm and stay out of you eyes without needing to be tugged into place.
Hat rests at about 17” unstretched. It was made to fit a head about 23” and can still fit heads a bit larger than that.
You’ll need US 9 [5.5mm] needles to make the cuff and the decreases at the top of the hat, which will require DPNs or a circular cable long enough to use magic loop. You’ll need US 7 [4.5mm] for the braid right above the cuff and US 10.5 [6.5mm] for the cables in the body of the hat - these can be 16” circulars, circulars long enough to do magic loop, or DPNs.
You’ll also need some scrap yarn and crochet hook for the cast on, a cable needle, and a sewing needle and 4 decorative buttons for the finish.
